The Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD) is a not-for-profit research & consultancy foundation which aims to support the conservation and sustainable use of natural ecosystems by building knowledge and stimulating awareness of the many ways in which people benefit from natural ecosystems. FSD's scientific assessments and ongoing research are utilized by a range of organizations and institutions as input into communication and decision-making to improve ecological integrity, social well-being and economic welfare, including among others the EU, the Dutch government and NGO’s (eg. WWF). FSD has carried out over 65 projects and provides institutional support to a number of ongoing activities aimed at conservation and sustainable ecosystem management (see www.fsd.nl)
FSD has considerable experience with international research projects, both as project leader and project contributor. Most recent projects related to the conservation and sustainable management of (coastal) ecosystems include the development of a database on ecosystem services for the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) study (www.teebweb.org) and an assessment of the economic effects of re-naturalizing the Wester Schelde in the Netherlands for WWF The Netherlands.
In addition, FSD manages a long-term observation program for changes in ecological and phenological changes in the Netherlands called De Natuurkalender ( Nature’s Calender) and coordinates the Ecosystem Services Partnership a worldwide network to enhance the science and practical application of ecosystem services assessment.
